Asbestos Exposure History in Chicago
Chicago's industrial belt — stretching from the South Side down through East Chicago, Indiana and the Calumet Region — was one of the largest concentrations of steel production and oil refining in American history. U.S. Steel's South Works, Republic Steel, and Inland Steel employed hundreds of thousands of workers exposed to asbestos insulation on furnaces, pipes, and industrial equipment. Standard Oil's Whiting Refinery (now BP) has operated since 1889 and is still in operation. These facilities represent the largest Midwest concentration of asbestos exposure.
