Asbestos Exposure History in Philadelphia
The Philadelphia Naval Shipyard operated from 1776 until 1995, building and repairing Navy ships for 219 years. Tens of thousands of shipyard workers and Navy personnel were exposed to asbestos in every conceivable capacity. The Sun Oil Marcus Hook refinery and Gulf Oil's Philadelphia refinery processed crude oil using extensive asbestos-insulated equipment from the 1940s through the 1980s. PECO's Eddystone Station and other area power plants similarly used asbestos in steam generation equipment.
