Asbestos Exposure History in Seattle
Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton has built, repaired, and decommissioned Navy ships since 1891 — and continues today. Tens of thousands of shipyard workers and sailors were exposed to asbestos in ships, boiler rooms, and repair facilities over more than a century of operation. Boeing's aircraft manufacturing facilities in Everett, Renton, and Auburn similarly exposed workers through aircraft brakes, engines, and insulation. The Pacific Northwest has one of the highest rates of asbestos-related disease per capita in the country.
